Choosing the right person to assist your loved one as they enter their golden years can be a difficult decision, but will ultimately help them navigate daily struggles with dignity and grace. Warning Signs of Neglect

Neglect can either be active – intentional actions taken by a caregiver – or passive – unintentional or unavoidable neglect due to anything from lack of experience to lack of resources to illness. However, in some cases, the victims could be neglecting themselves and refusing care. These cases can be incredibly complicated to manage, and often require outside help to ensure that your loved one sees a reason to begin caring for themselves again.

In the first two cases, the caregiver is nearly always at fault. Whether they lack the proper skills, training or energy, or if they have a substance abuse problem or have health needs of their own that prevent them from properly fulfilling their role, it’s important to keep an eye on your loved one to ensure that they receive the care they need. Some signs to look out for include:

Behavioral Indicators:

  • Caregiver’s refusal to seek outside help
  • Caregiver’s dissatisfaction with health care and social providers, resulting in constant changes to providers
  • Caregiver’s obvious lack of the necessary skills
  • Caregiver’s attempts to isolate the elder from relatives, friends or the outside world in general
  • Caregiver showing exhaustion, frustration or anger
  • Victim expressing unrealistic expectations of their care, like claiming that their situation will improve or that their obviously inadequate care is sufficient
  • Victim exhibiting fear of their caregiver
  • Victim exhibiting self-destructive behavior
  • Victim exhibiting regressive behavior
  • Victim appearing to be emotionally detached, withdrawn or numb
  • Victim is disoriented and confused, which could be an indication of malnutrition
  • Victim’s sudden loss of appetite
  • Victim having difficulty sleeping, or constant nightmares
  • Victim exhibiting despair, depression, crying or other indicators of emotional distress

Physical Indicators:

  • Bedsores
  • Improper clothing for the weather
  • Poor personal hygiene, including unwashed clothing, lice-infested hair, the presence of urine or feces, etc.
  • Worsening dementia
  • Worsening of chronic diseases despite the existence of a care plan
  • Lack of necessary items like glasses, wheelchairs, dentures, braces, etc.
  • Untreated medical conditions
  • Dehydration
  • Malnourishment
