A recent article in Insurance Journal reported on a lawsuit brought against Citizens Insurance for depriving homeowners of windstorm mitigation discounts through a reinspection program. The plaintiffs in the law suit have asked to become a class action law suit against Florida's state owned property insurer.
The plaintiffs say that homeowners have purchased extra precautions against hurricane and other storm damage by purchasing shutters and other items to protect their homes, but that they have been denied the mitigation credits that they are entitled to by Citizens.
The plaintiffs attorneys estimate that roughly $190 million in credits have been lost since 2010, and that the average increase in premiums per household was $800.
