A pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck at the intersection of East 15th Ave. and North 15th St. early in the morning on Sunday, February 26.
The driver sped off after the crash, leaving officials with only a limited description of the vehicle and driver in question. According to the Tampa Police Department, the driver appeared to be a white or Hispanic male with dark hair with a late 90’s or early 00’s Ford pickup truck.
Few details about the fatal injuries the victims suffered were released, but Tampa PD provided security camera photos of the vehicle to local media outlets.
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable to injury and death when drivers act recklessly. While any crash involving a car can threaten the health and safety of everyone involved, pedestrians don’t have anywhere near the level of protection other drivers or passengers have. Far too many car accidents involving pedestrians are caused by drivers who choose to ignore signs and road markings warning them to slow down and pay attention to their surroundings.
According to a report released by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles there were more than 9,000 crashes involving pedestrians in 2015, resulting in 7,870 reported injuries and 632 reported deaths. Pedestrian crashes accounted for more than 20 percent of all traffic-related fatalities in Florida, making them the second deadliest type of crash in the entire state.
Reckless drivers claim thousands of lives in Florida each year, and the families of those victims are left facing potentially massive medical bills and funeral expenses along with the emotional distress that comes with losing a loved one. If you lost a loved one in a crash caused by a negligent driver, you may be able to file a lawsuit to secure compensation to cover those costs and any other damages you may have incurred.
